"Celebrate Freedom and Arrive Safely"

Rhode Island Public Safety Leaders Deliver 4th of July Safety Message in Bristol

Rhode Island public safety leaders gathered today at the Bristol Maritime Center with a simple message for Rhode Islanders and the thousands of visitors expected this holiday weekend: celebrate America's Independence safely. Whether traveling by car, motorcycle, bicycle, e-bike, boat, or on foot, officials urged everyone to make responsible choices that prevent crashes and save lives.

"The Fourth of July brings every type of traveler onto our roads and waterways," said Colonel Michael Correia, President of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association and Chief of the Barrington Police Department. "Whether you're driving, boating, walking, riding a bicycle, operating an e-bike, or traveling by motorcycle, the rules are the same: stay alert, stay sober, and look out for one another. Every Rhode Islander deserves to enjoy the holiday and return home safely."

“With the Fourth of July approaching, we know that this is a time when there are more people out driving and celebrating,” said RIDOT State Traffic Safety Engineer Steven Pristawa. “So, like my counterparts speaking today, we urge people to make safety the highest priority. Slow down. Buckle up. Don’t text and drive. Never drive impaired. Let’s create great memories of good times and safe travels home.”

Officials emphasized that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable crashes and encouraged everyone celebrating with alcohol or cannabis to arrange a sober ride before heading home.

With temperatures expected to climb into the 90s during the holiday weekend, Bristol Fire Chief and President of the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs, Michael DeMello reminded families that a few simple precautions can prevent emergencies."Our goal is simple," said Chief DeMello. "We want everyone to enjoy the Fourth of July without needing our assistance. Stay hydrated, watch for the signs of heat illness, never leave a child in a vehicle, and if you're on the water, wear a life jacket and never boat impaired. A few simple precautions can prevent a tragedy."

Serving this year as Chief Marshal of the Bristol Fourth of July Parade, Thomas Carroll reminded the public that the success of the celebration depends on everyone doing their part. "We hope people remember this year's Fourth of July not because it was hot, but because it was safe," Carroll said. "Whether you're driving, walking, riding a bicycle, or enjoying the water, slow down, stay focused, follow the rules of the road, and never drive impaired. Every safe decision helps protect not only you and your family, but also the first responders working throughout the holiday to keep our communities safe."
