Police Chiefs are "Freezin' for a Reason"

Chiefs Johnson, Moynihan, and Rollinson are Super Plungers to benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island

This weekend three Rhode Island police chiefs: Chief Elwood Johnson of Richmond, Chief Matthew Moynihan of South Kingstown, and Chief Eric Rollinson of Scituate are taking their support for the Special Olympics to a new level and participating in the 2025 Torch Run Super Plunge.

Starting at 1 pm on Saturday, March 22, and continuing until 12 pm on Sunday, March 23, the Chiefs will join a small group of "Super Plungers" to brave the chilly waters at Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett. They will be plunging once every hour to support this incredible cause.

"I have been volunteering for 36 years, and this will be my twelfth Super Plunge to help raise awareness and funds in support of over 4,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities," shared Chief Elwood Johnson of the Richmond Police Department. "I have witnessed the best examples of humanity whenever I am in the company of our SORI athletes, their families, and the many volunteers who help. There is no experience like depriving yourself of sleep for 24 straight hours, subjecting yourself to the cold night air and diving into the dark ocean at 1:00 AM to feel the pain of freezing water, but there is also no feeling like being part of the Special Olympics movement and witnessing the power of inclusion and acceptance for our SORI athletes."

"I hate being cold, but I love the Special Olympics, and every year I am inspired by the athletes and their determination to compete," said Chief Matthew Moynihan of the South Kingstown Police Department. "Supporting the athletes and their dreams is so meaningful to me and so I'm excited to be part of the Super Plunge team."

"I am honored and excited to be part of this truly dedicated and supportive team of Super Plungers," said Chief Eric Rollinson of the Scituate Police Department. "Helping to spread awareness about the incredible impact Special Olympics Rhode Island has on athletes and their families is deeply meaningful to me. I look forward to supporting this great cause with such an amazing team."
