Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association Endorses Principlesto Strengthen Public Safety Collaboration

The Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association (RIPCA) today expressed its strong support for a set of shared principles developed during the recent Public Safety Leadership Convening, a national dialogue focused on strengthening coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement partners that was hosted the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police).

The Public Safety Leadership Convening brought together leaders from across the public safety spectrum to identify solutions-oriented approaches to improving cooperation. The resulting principles emphasize communication, officer and community safety, and a shared commitment to constitutional policing and public trust.

RIPCA supports the convening’s foundational focus on strengthening relationships and clarifying expectations among agencies. The principles highlight the need for consistent, two-way communication, early coordination of operations, and respect for the roles and responsibilities of each level of government.

The principles also call for responsible, fact-based communication to reduce misinformation and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement. RIPCA agrees that measured, apolitical messaging is critical to maintaining credibility and fostering productive relationships with the communities officers serve.

The Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association remains committed to advancing policies and practices that enhance public safety, support law enforcement professionals, and build strong, trust-based relationships throughout the state.

The principles of the Public Safety Leadership Convening can be found on the RIPCA website: Law Enforcement Convening Shared Principles.
