CHIEF OF WESTERLY - Chief Shawn Lacey
Shawn Lacey, a 30-year veteran of the Westerly Police Department, was sworn in Thursday morning as chief of police. The appointment is the latest achievement in a career that started on Jan. 25, 1988, when Lacey went to work as a patrolman. Before his swearing in by Town Clerk Donna Giordano, he served as captain, in the department's second-in-command position, since 2011.
Lacey rose through the ranks serving as corporal from 1998-2001, sergeant from 2001-2008, lieutenant from 2008-2011 and captain from 2011-2018. He holds certifications in hostage negotiations, weapons of mass destruction/terrorism; police leadership and administration; incident command system training; special weapons and tactics; and as a DARE officer. He earned a master's degree in Criminal Justice from Boston University, and a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Roger Williams University. Lacey is a life-long town resident. He and his wife, Darlene, have three grown children.
